Once again, graduate programs from the University of Maryland have made a strong showing in the 2018 U.S. News and World Report rankings released this week, with more than 20 programs or subject areas appearing in the top 25.

The University of Maryland is on the list of the top 25 producers of U.S. Fulbright Scholars for 2016-17. Six of the 17 UMD recent grads and students awarded Fulbrights for the 2016-17 academic year are graduate students.

On January 18, the Graduate School hosted its first daylong event focusing on graduate student success. Drawing approximately 90 graduate students and postdocs, this event, “Invest in Your Future: A Graduate School Success Symposium,” featured an entire day of workshops on a variety of topics, including career development, funding, writing and research, and time and stress management.

The University of Maryland provides a positive overall experience for international graduate students, according to a study administered by the Graduate School in Fall 2016. 79% of the respondents felt their overall experience at the University of Maryland has been satisfactory and 84% would recommend UMD to others.

Adam Behrens, a 2015 PhD graduate from the Fischell Department of Bioengineering, has been given honorable mention in the 2016 Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award in Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Engineering for his dissertation, titled “Polymeric Materials for Hemostatic and Surgical Sealant Applications.” Behrens’s dissertation was selected among the top 3 from more than 45 dissertations from institutions throughout the United States and Canada.

The University of Maryland recently received a five-year, $3 million National Science Foundation grant to help researchers in the life sciences learn how to transform the massive amounts of raw data made possible by the advent of powerful new technologies into useful information from which new biological insights can be inferred. The Graduate School has dramatically extended its programming for graduate students this semester, adding new professional and career development initiatives and providing training for students to secure external funding. This new programming is designed to equip them with additional tools to be successful throughout the course of their studies and be better prepared for their future careers.

In September, the University of Maryland observed National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) for the first time. Sponsored by the university’s newly-formed Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, a collaboration between the Graduate School, the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, and the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Graduate School hosted several events allowing postdocs from across campus to network and learn about resources available to postdocs at the University of Maryland.

Gabriele Betancourt-Martinez, a PhD candidate in astronomy, is the University of Maryland’s representative in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, sponsored by Universitas 21, an international network of research universities.
