Twenty-four undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni from the University of Maryland have been selected for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, along with 31 honorable mentions. The prestigious award, which recognizes exceptional graduate students who are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as social and behavioral science, is the country’s oldest graduate fellowship program.

Doctoral candidate Samuel Ramsey won the University of Maryland’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Ramsey, a student in the Department of Entomology, was selected by a panel of judges from nine UMD finalists during a live competition held April 5 during Graduate Research Appreciation Day.

Four University of Maryland graduate students have been awarded the Big 10 Academic Alliance/Smithsonian Institution Fellowship for 2017. These one-year fellowships are offered by the Graduate Deans of the Big 10 Academic Alliance in partnership with the Smithsonian’s Office of Fellowships and Internships and are awarded to outstanding doctoral candidates from Big 10 institutions who intend to conduct research using Smithsonian collections, facilities or experts in cooperation with at least one Smithsonian advisor.

The Graduate School is hosting the fourth annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition during Graduate Research Appreciation Day (GRAD) on April 5. The 3MT competition challenges doctoral students to communicate the significance of their research projects to an educated, non-specialist audience in just three minutes. The nine finalists for the UMD competition will present live on April 5 from 3-4 pm in the Charles Carroll Room of the Stamp Student Union. The finalists for the 2017 contest are:

Once again, graduate programs from the University of Maryland have made a strong showing in the 2018 U.S. News and World Report rankings released this week, with more than 20 programs or subject areas appearing in the top 25.
